I have a large family, 6 of our, and with growing kids, I have to go shopping more often than not. I have gotten pretty good about making a shopping list throughout the week and going shopping the essentials. That is the benefit of having a well stocked pantry and cold storage, is that you don’t have to go to the store 3 times a day ;). When you do go to the store, make sure you take a list with you so that you don’t forget anything and also so that you don’t buy items that are unnecessary.
There are 5 items that are always on our weekly shopping list and I think they are a great addition to almost any meal!
- Meat (or meat substitute)
- Fresh fruit and Veggies
- Juice and Milk
- Baking Mixes (like Martha White® that you can use for breading, quick meals, etc)
- Cheeses
With these basics you can make so many different kinds of meals. I make a menu so I have a better idea of what groceries I will need for the week, and we also go grocery shopping at a less busy time of the day so that we can have some fun with it. I take my kids with me a lot of the time and they are so helpful, so I make sure to keep them entertained and be positive so that they enjoy the experience too. On my last trip I took my son after I picked him up from school. I like going to Smith’s for our groceries because of the great service, quality produce and low prices. My son had so much fun helping me get things off the shelf, bag the produce and even choose a couple of non-list things that we could still use in our meals.
Some of the ingredients we grabbed (like the chopped steak and Martha White® Baking Mixes) we are going to be using to make Chicken Fried Steak with Potato Puree and a Gravy. The recipe will be featured later this week, so be sure to check back for it – it tastes amazing! In the mean time – head out to Smith’s (or your local Kroger store) and get your grocery shopping done so that you will be ready.
