Since I can remember, Skittles have always been one of my favorite treats. I have been a good mom and passed that love onto my kids 😉 and so you can generally always find Skittles in our house somewhere. With all of the Basketball on T.V. (and our back porch) I wanted to make a fun basketball themed treat for my kids using Skittles. We decided to make a Basketball Cupcake Cake and decorate it with Skittles. I love how it turned out! It makes you feel like you can “Dunk the Rainbow”!
Putting it together wasn’t hard, and it actually didn’t take very long. We made cupcakes (you can make them according to package directions. I used food coloring to make mine orange, in my Silicone Cupcake Pan). Once they were done cooking, I let them cool for a little while. Then I took a pie pan, and organized 7 cupcakes in a circle (my daughter excitedly told me that I was making her a flower). Then I started frosting and realized I needed to fill in the gaps on the edges, so I took extra cupcakes and cut them into 4ths, and put the chunks into the openings around the edges before I finished frosting.
Once we got the frosting all smoothed out, we starting putting the Skittles on. We used purple for the lines of the basketball. This was fun – my kids kept swiping Skittles. I am glad I had a big bag that I picked up at Sam’s Club or else I am sure I would have run out of certain colors. lol.
We proceeded to use different colors of Skittles to fill in the Basketball. In honor of St. Patrick’s Day coming up and the fun basketball games that we are watching. It was a win-win. AND we got to Taste the Rainbow!
It turned out GREAT! I love it. And the Skittles taste so yummy on the cake with the Cream Cheese frosting.
Another fun thing we did was take Ice Cream Cones and fill them with batter and bake them so that our kids had Basketball Cupcake Cones. They turned out great. We frosted the tops and decorated with skittles and then made our own Basketball Cake toppers (download a free printable here). These are great for when you have company over to watch the games, or even for Basketball themed parties!
I LOVE LOVE how cute the Basketball Cupcake Cake is all covered in rainbow Skittles, and the Cupcake Cones are great too – with the toppers and the colorful Skittles. It is really the perfect topping. My kids hovered while I took pictures because they couldn’t wait to dig in…
I was told that they were “very yummy”! Score for mommy. 🙂

I really love the idea of a cupcake cake. Never thought of that before but makes so much sense. Of course, I love anything with Skittles on it. #client
