May the Fourth is coming up soon – so I wanted to share this fun Star Wars Death Star Cake that I made. It is the perfect way to celebrate Star Wars Day and having something delicious to eat while you are binge-watching the Star Wars movies!
You will need
- Death Star Ice Cube Mold
- Chocolate chips or almond bark
- 2 8 inch cakes (I made mine from a devil’s food cake box cake)
- Frosting (I used cream cheese and chocolate)
- Blue food coloring spray
- Red sprinkles
- Pastry scraper
How to make Death Star Cake
I got my Death Star Ice Cube Mold from Amazon and I was very happy with them. You do have to be a little careful taking the mold off. This can be resolved with letting it sit for just a few minutes after you take it out of the freezer so it doesn’t break.
You will want to make the Death Star molds first with the chocolate – just put the mold together, melt the chocolate and pour it in through the small opening. Put your finger over the opening and turn it around and around to make sure the whole inside is coated. Then you will put it in the freezer right away for a couple of hours.
While the Death Stars are freezing you can make your cake, let them cool and then put them in the freezer. I would recommend doing this for a few hours (it makes it way easier to frost). I just wrapped mine in tinfoil and put them in.
When you are ready, take the cakes out of the freezer. They might have stuck to the tinfoil a little – just be careful. I put the bottom one on a plate, then I did an outside layer of the cream cheese frosting and filled the middle in with the chocolate (as seen in the picture).
Then I added the next layer, but don’t put the cream cheese frosting on the top. It will just go around the outside. Really fill in the gap between the cakes (you can softly push them together to get them closer). Then I used my scraper and softly dragged it along the outside as I turned the plate to get the naked cake look you see in the picture.
Take the Death Stars out about 10 minutes before you are ready to place them. It will take a little time and patience to get the molds off. Do this after it has set out for about 10 minutes.
Now you will frost the top with the chocolate frosting and add the red sprinkles. To add the blue to the edges, I used paper towels to cover the plate/counter so it wouldn’t get messy. Then I just lightly sprayed it. You will have to move the paper towels a few times to get all the edges.
Now you are ready to take the ice mold off the chocolate Death Star. Be very patient. I did break one of mine, but the other one turned out perfect! I recommend making these beforehand and actually having it ready to just go on the cake. You can put the death star chocolate in the freezer and just take it out when you are ready for it. Then you don’t have to worry about all this when you are ready to have the cake done.
If you are making a whole bunch, you can re-freeze the already made Death Stars (just put them in a baggy) and then pull them out when you need them. Then you can pull them out and put them on the cake or even cupcakes right before serving. You can opt to fill them with chocolate or some other filling (maybe pudding or whatever) as well. I just left mine hollow.
