Salisbury Steak is a family favorite that we make at least once a month. It is very easy to make which means it’s a great meal even on busy nights. You can also make this ahead of time and just pull it out, bake it and serve. We like to serve this with mashed potatoes and steamed veggies.
To make your Salisbury Steak you will need:
- 1.5 lbs of ground burger (for 7 patties)
- Can of Condensed French Onion Soup (10.5 oz)
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 egg
- 3/4 cup of dry bread crumbs
- 1 Dry Onion Soup mix packet
- Mushrooms (optional)
I recommend very lean (like 90 or 93% fat) so there is not any grease runoff in the gravy.
To make the patties, you will take the ground burger and mix it with 1/2 cup of the soup, the Worcestershire sauce, egg, bread crumbs, and 1/2 of the dry onion soup mix. (I like to wear disposable gloves so my hands don’t get gross.)
You will take the patties and form them (similar to the picture below). As you form them, you will put them into a pan and brown them on each side. As you can see – just the outsides are browned – and they will slightly fall apart. Carefully place them in a glass baking dish.
Then you will take the dry onion soup mix and the rest of the french onion soup and mix them together to make a gravy. Optionally you can put mushrooms on the patties before you pour the gravy (soups mixed together). This adds a great flavor to the Sailsbury Steak and the gravy.

Once they are ready, you will put them into the oven at 375 for about 45 minutes. While the Salisbury Steak is cooking, you will cook your veggies and/or rice. I love to serve these with Asparagus that we pan-fry with some butter. They taste great! You can also make mashed potatoes or even brown rice.

You will want to serve right away. Use the gravy from the pan to cover your potatoes/rice and your Salisbury Steak. This doesn’t take much time to put together and you can spend some time with your family while they are cooking. If you have a rice cooker – you can make the brown rice in that!
