The holidays are coming and with it, my kitchen is filled with the smells of Christmas baking. I love being in my kitchen creating memories with my kids as we create and bake. I try to teach them about service, and so we love to share the yummy treats we make with our friends and family so they can enjoy them and create memories of their own. There are a lot of reasons why I love being in the kitchen, and most of them are great memories from my childhood, that push me to want to share that with my kids and create memories with them. I am sure many of you can relate. Today we made a delicious recipe that we love to eat as much as we love to share it with others. It is Fried Cinnamon Apples with a crumble topping and caramel and M&M’s® Holiday Baking Minis.
It was fun and easy to make and something your kids can help you with. To make the Fried Cinnamon Apples you will need 2-3 large apples (I used Fiji apples), eggs, milk, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, baking powder, lemon juice, Quaker Instant Oats (1 min oats), Mini Holiday M&M’s® Holiday Baking Minis, Caramel sauce (in the jar), oil, unsalted chilled butter stick, sugar and a few other things. Most or all of these you will probably have one hand.
To make the Fried Apples:
Ingredients –
- 2-3 large apples (I like Fiji)
- 1 cup of flour
- ¾ – 1 cup of milk
- 2 tbsp of brown sugar
- 1 tsp of baking powder
- ½ tsp of salt
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp of cinnamon
- ½ tbsp. of oil
- 2-3 cups of 1 minute Quaker Oats
- Caramel sauce
- M&M’s® Holiday Baking Minis
Directions –
- In a large skillet heat about 1-2 cups of oil on med-low heat. While it is heating prepare the apples and batter.
- Core and peel the apples (I used an apple corer and then a potato peeler for the apple skin)
- Slice them into about ¼ inch thick slices
- In a bowl mix the flour, milk, brown sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, egg and ½ tbsp. of oil together in a bowl with a whisk. When smooth and blended.
- Test the hotness of the oil by dripping a small drop of batter into the pan, it shouldn’t burn or fry really fast, just a slow cook. If the oil is too hot, turn the stove down and wait a few minutes and test again.
- Get another bowl and pour a small amount of the Quaker oats in it (you will add new oats for each apple you batter)
- Now you will have a bowl for the apples, one for the batter, and one for the oats.
- When the oil is ready, take one of the apples and coat the apple with the batter.
- Then you will put it into the oats and coat the battered apple in 1 minute oats.
- You can dip it in the batter again, or put it straight into the pan to cook.
- Once you get 6-7 apples coated and in the pan cooking you will want to make the crumble
- After the crumble is made (see below for recipe) and the apples are done, you will want to add the caramel and M&M’s® Holiday Baking Minis. See below for more info.
Here is a video to show you how I battered the apples and fried them:
To make the crumble –
- 1/2 cup of flour
- 1/4 cup of sugar
- 2 tbsp. of brown sugar (packed)
- 1 tsp of ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp of salt
- 3 tbsp of chilled unsalted butter cut into small cubes
Blend all of the dry ingredients in a food processor for about 5-10 seconds. Then add the cubes of butter and blend in bursts until it resembles wet sand. This is what you sprinkle on the top. You can also add some of the Quaker oats to this crumble mixture and fry them for a short time to make a crispy crumble for the tops of the fried apples. Its so yummy!
When the crumble is done, you will sprinkle it on top of the frying apples. I fried them for about 7-10 minutes flipping them like 3 or 4 times. Once they were done, I pulled them out of the skillet and put them onto a cookie sheet lined with a silicone mat. That is where I drizzled the caramel over the top and added the M&M’s® Holiday Baking Minis to give it that holiday look. When I was at Target getting the ingredients for this, I also saw the Glad® – Holiday products so I grabbed the containers and the Press and Seal. They both worked great for the friend baskets we made to give away.
Overall I really think this was one of the best apples recipes we have made and my kids love it when we make it. There is so much that your kids can help with to make this recipe and cooking with my family are always good memories. Make some memories with your family this year and bake something yummy. I would love to hear what you make and what you think about this fried apples recipe.
