Fry Bread Tacos (Navajo Tacos)

May 11, 2020

Growing up, one of my favorite things to eat was Fry Bread Tacos – or as we called them, Navajo Tacos. You take fry bread and pile it with delicious things like chili, cheese, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, olives, salsa, black beans, and anything else you would like. Then you eat it (or devour it like me). lol.

These are really easy to make when you use frozen rolls (like Rhodes rolls) for the fry bread and then just put together the ingredients. I can literally have this meal ready in less than 30 minutes (not including the time it takes for the rolls to rise). This is one you have to plan ahead on so you can set the rolls out on a tray and have them rise for about 3-4 hours before you need to fry them.

Indian Fry Bread

So here is what you need for your Indian Fry Bread:

  • Frozen Rolls or make homemade fry bread
  • Chili (canned or homemade)
  • Shredded Cheese
  • Diced Tomatoes
  • Chopped Lettuce
  • Diced Olives
  • Sour Cream
  • Salsa
  • Diced Onions

To make the fry bread, you will take the raised rolls, one at a time, and put them into a pan with a quarter-inch of oil that is heated on med-hi heat. They should cook in about 45-60 seconds per side – so watch closely. I love to use these silicone tongs to turn then and pull them out. Then I put them into my Enameled Cast Iron Dutch Oven with a few paper towels in the bottom to soak up the oil.

If you have extra hands, you can have the chili and black beans opened and heated while you are cooking the fry bread. Otherwise, just put the lid mostly on the dutch oven to keep the fry bread warm, and then prepare everything for the toppings.

I just put everything out in bowls and let my family serve it up like a buffet. They love it! I always try to make extra fry bread so that we can eat some with butter and honey. YUM!

This really is a great family meal that everyone will love because they can make it the way they like it.
