We love owls. They are so cute. I also love making them in crafts and food – and this Owl Cupcake Cake was such a fun way to show that. I made this for my daughter a few years ago but love how it turned out so I wanted to share it with you now since my kids have been asking me to make it again.
The little owls are also very cute and really easy to make. They are perfect for parties, school treats, friends and family. I have done step by step photos below so you can see each step.
To make the Owl Cupcake Cake and Baby Owl Cupcakes you will need:
- Halloween Sandwich Cookies (like OREO)
- Junior Mints
- Chocolate Frosting
- Vanilla or Cream Cheese Frosting
- Chocolate Cupcakes (you can make these with a cake mix or from scratch)
- Shredded Coconut
- Stripped shortbread cookies (circles)
- Banana RUNTS candy
- Orange chocolate chips
- Pretzel sticks
How much of each thing you will need will depend on how many you are making. Each baby owl uses 2 cookies (1 for each eye with the cream frosting on it), 2 junior mints, some frosting to secure the mints to the cookies, and a runt for the nose. You can make them chocolate or vanilla (or whatever color you want. You can also use orange or vanilla or chocolate cookies for the eyes.
I put the owl together on my silicone baking mat and a cookie sheet. You can use whatever is easiest for you. For the large owl, you will need 14 regular cupcakes. Frost the middle chocolate and the top two and bottom two will be white. See the pictures below. The chocolate ones will be frosted over, covering any gaps so it looks like one piece.
Once you have them frosted, you will push them all together and so you have the eyes and the feet. Then you will add the shredded coconut on the belly and the eyes.
With the cupcakes frosted and the shredded coconut added, you will add the eyes. Leave a little hole in the middle where the nose will go.
Take 4 sandwich cookies and put them on the four outside cupcakes for the “wings” of the owl.
Add an orange chocolate chip for the nose, and 1/2 cookie (as pictured below) for the eyebrows. You can add extra cooking underneath for support and some frosting in stripes for some added dimension.
You can add some orange chocolate chips for the claws, and pretzel sticks for the branches the owl is sitting on. I also added chocolate chips to the centers of the circle shortbread cookies to fill in the hole.
With the main owl completed, you will make the little baby owls. These are simply a frosted cupcake, with two eyes (cookies with junior mints) and the banana candy for the nose.
I really love how these turned out! They are SO CUTE!
I hope you enjoy making your owl cupcake cake and baby owl cupcakes
