I am excited to share another dinner idea with you today. My whole family LOVED these and so I am sure they will be a hit for yours too. The homemade tortilla bowls are easy to make for this delicious taco salad recipe.
If you like to plan your meals ahead of time – or want to start, I have created a great system with free printables for you to use. It separates each day into a specific type of food (like Sundays is Italian, and Tuesday is Mexican). Then I just plan a month worth of meals out. Get the free printables here.
When you make this meal, remember the homemade tortilla bowls do take some time to make, so be sure to start early enough to finish them all.
Here is what you need to make your homemade tortilla bowls:
- Flour tortillas
- Canola oil (or similar oil)
- Tinfoil
- Basting brush
- (2) 1.5 qt glass mixing bowls
- Cookie sheet/with silicone baking mat

You will form the tinfoil around one of the glass bowls, then pull it off. As you can see in the picture below, it will create a kind of bowl. Take the basting brush and smear a light layer of oil all over the inside of the tinfoil. Now you will take one of the glass bowls, and turn it upside down. Put a flour tortilla over it and then lightly press around the edges, and then put the other glass bowl over the top to form the bowl shape.
Take the glass bowl off, and then set the tortilla inside the tinfoil and baste the inside with oil. You can fit three on a baking sheet. You will cook at 375 degrees for about 10 minutes, and then you will take the bowls out, and remove them from the tinfoil and then continue cooking for another 10 minutes.

Taco Salad Recipe
While your tortillas are baking, you will want to prepare the rest of your ingredients. Taco meat, refried beans, onions, corn, shredded cheese, queso fresco, tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, olives, sour cream, guacamole, garbanzo beans, and black beans are just a few ideas, lol. We also fried up some panela cheese. If you haven’t had it before – I highly recommend it. This is so fun. We just set everything out and let each person build their own to taste.

It worked out great because anything that is leftover you can use to make taco soup, street tacos or a number of other things.

INGREDIENTS:
- 1 lb of ground burger, cooked and seasoned with taco seasoning
- 1 can of refried beans
- 1 sweet onion, diced
- I can of corn, drained
- 1 lb of shredded cheese (Mexican four-cheese is great)
- 1 package of queso fresco, sliced or crumbled
- 3 tomatoes, diced
- 1 red pepper, diced
- 1 green pepper, diced
- 1 poblano pepper, diced (or something spicier if you prefer)
- Green leaf lettuce, shredded
- 1 can of olives, diced
- Sour cream
- Guacamole (or sliced avocados, or both)
- 1 can of garbanzo beans, drained
- 1 can of black beans (leave liquid)
- Salsa
- Taco sauce
- Panela cheese, sliced and fried (this is optional and eaten as a side)
DIRECTIONS:
- If you haven’t already made your tortilla bowls, you will need to do that first and get them cooking. You can get the recipe above. Put each bowl on its own plate as they finish.
- Cook the ground burger, drain, and mix with taco seasoning according to package directions.
- Cut, dice, or shred the ingredients and put them in different bowls/plates so each item can be added only if wanted.
- When all the bowls are done, you will let everyone build their taco salad according to what they want to put in it – this is the fun part.
